Abstract

Following on from the Designing for Uncertainty seminar, Top 10 tips for Low Rise Seminar and experience from the Low Damage Seismic Design Guidelines project ASG is hosting a panel presentation & discussion on What Does Good Look Like?

Recent experience has highlighted the fact that there are gaps in our Standards that allow designers to not always detail for ductility and robustness. This panel discussion looks to explore the gap between just meeting Code minimum and providing much better performance by using simple concepts of good practice. The panel will also explore the obstacles to good performance and give practical examples of simple things that can be done to greatly improve performance.

Biography

Panel members:

Paul Campbell: National Technical Leader – Building Structures WSP
Paul is one of the lead authors working on the Low Damage Seismic Design Guidance, a member of the MoE Engineering Strategy Group and ex SESOC President.

Professor Ken Elwood: MBIE-EQC Chief Engineer (Building Resilience)/Professor of Earthquake Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering – University of Auckland
Ken is currently involved in the MBIE Seismic Risk Working Group, Low Damage Seismic Design Guidelines and Te Hiranga Ru QuakeCoRE.

Michelle Grant: Director LGE Consulting Ltd/SESOC President
Michelle has just completed her presidents road show on top 10 tips, champions small practitioners and low rise design and is the current SESOC President.

Associate Professor Rick Henry: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering – University of Auckland
Rick is QuakeCoRE Research Programme Lead: Discipline Theme 2 (Whole-of-Building Seismic Performance) and President of the Concrete New Zealand Learned Society.
