Abstract
The welding process is commonly used to join structural steel sections and plate to form fabricated components for building and infrastructure projects. The welding process can contribute between 10% and 50% to the cost of fabrication, depending on the complexity of connections and the type of welds. Overspecification of welds and poor joint detailing can significantly increase the cost of welded steel structures.
This presentation will cover the essential elements of welding including welding processes, types and quality categories as well as material and ductility requirements. It will examine the role of the engineer in specifying and monitoring welded steel construction to NZS 3404 and related standards and it will offer practical tips for designing and specifying cost effective welds.
