Abstract

Extensive research is being undertaken in a collaborative effort between academics and engineers in New Zealand and the USA. Many commonalities exist, despite using different diaphragm systems, lateral load systems, and design methods. Through this research, we are discovering how FRP behaves in this situation, the need for proper detailing, and the mechanisms to transfer the loads between lateral systems. This presentation will give an update on the research outcomes, as well as high level “Dos and Don’ts” and general ideas to improve the state of design in New Zealand.

Biography

Enrique is a structural engineer with extensive experience in the seismic behaviour and strengthening of concrete structures, which was the topic of his Master and PhD projects. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, where he teaches seismic design of concrete bridges to postgraduate students and supervises research projects on topics mainly related to strengthening and seismic behaviour of concrete structures.
