Abstract
Major international developments on composite standards are underway in North America and Europe. Closer to home, the first joint Australian and New Zealand design standards for: steel and composite bridges (AS/NZS 5100.6); and composite buildings (AS/NZS 2327) have been published and are now cited in the Building Code together with the NCC in Australia. As Chair of the AS/NZS 5100.6 Committee and Member of the AS/NZS 2327 Committee, Stephen will present the major changes from previous New Zealand design practice. The challenges from introducing higher strength materials than are currently permitted by other international standards on composite construction will be discussed, together with further enhancements that are currently being considered in future editions of these standards. The presentation will cover:
• An introduction to composite construction.
• Design of composite beams and shear connectors.
• Design of composite slabs.
• Design of composite columns.
• Electronic design tools to support the use of AS/NZS 2327.
Biography
Dr Stephen Hicks possesses over 20-years of research and development experience within steel construction industry in both Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Following a PhD at Cambridge University, Stephen spent 11-years at the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) in the UK, where he was formerly Senior Manager of Building Engineering. Since joining HERA in 2008 he has been the General Manager of Structural Systems. Stephen will soon be returning to the UK to take up a full Professorship in Civil Engineering at the University of Warwick.
Internationally, Stephen is well known in the areas of steel-concrete composite structures together with floor vibrations and has authored/co-authored over 100 publications, including papers and industry design guides. Since 2011 he has Chaired the Standards Australia Committee responsible for first joint steel and composite design standard for bridges AS/NZS 5100.6 and also worked on the development of the first joint design standard for composite buildings AS/NZS 2327. He was formerly the UK representative on CEN Sub-committee 4, which is responsible for the European composite buildings and bridge standard Eurocode 4.
Stephen is currently serving his fifth term on the SESOC Management Committee. In 2015 he established and became Chair of the New Zealand National Group of IABSE before leading and winning the New Zealand bid to host the 2020 IABSE Congress in Christchurch. He also holds other board and governance roles, including Executive Councillor of SCNZ, Director of the Australasian Certification Authority for Reinforcing and Structural Steels (ACRS) and Director of EPD Australasia.
