Design Features Reports – Paul Campbell, SESOC President //
The need to clearly convey the design intent is a fundamental requirement for a successful outcome to any project. As design becomes more automated and computerised the need to clearly articulate and document the decisions, assumptions and philosophy of projects has never been greater. SESOC is pleased to launch an update to our existing DFRs and discuss key aspects.
Designing Schools in NZ: Structural & Geotechnical Guidelines – John Hare, SESOC Past President:
The Ministry of Education owns one of the largest property portfolios in New Zealand, with more than 30,000 buildings in about 2,100 schools. Engineering design and assessments occur through various mechanisms – nationally via Ministry programmes, regionally through the Ministry’s property managers, and locally through schools’ Boards of Trustees.
The Ministry has recently released Version 2.0 of the Designing Schools in New Zealand: Structural and Geotechnical Guidelines, which set out the Ministry’s requirements and expectations for the structural and geotechnical aspects of the design and assessment of school buildings. These guidelines form part of the set of documents that designers, along with structural and geotechnical engineers, should refer to when undertaking work on school buildings.
This presentation by members of the Ministry’s Engineering Strategy Group that prepared the document will summarise the key features of the Guidelines, highlighting the key points that engineers designing and assessing school buildings need to know about.
The Guidelines are available on the Ministry’s website:
