Multi-storey Light Timber-framed Buildings in New Zealand – Engineering Guide: A BRANZ Guidance Design Document” by David Carradine, Senior Structural Research Engineer, BRANZ

The New Zealand Building Code Clause B1 Structure, requires engineers to consider all physical conditions likely to affect the stability of the building such as temperature and fire in section B1.3.3 (c) & (i) respectively. The current state of structural fire engineering design of buildings in New Zealand is about 2-3 decades away when compared to earthquake engineering, this has contributed to the poor implementation of a detailed fire strategy to building designs. This presentation is aimed at tackling some of the common misconceptions by structural engineers and the best way to implement first principles fire strategy to the design of buildings.

Pushing Boundaries with Light Timber Framing: Mary Potter Apartments by Daniel Moroder, Structural Engineer, PTL Structural Consultants

The presentation covers the design of a 6 storey timber building in Wellington. The structure has a number of geometrical irregularities which together with architectural, acoustical and fire constraints resulted in a number of design challenges. All bracing walls are made of plywood lined LTF walls with a continuous rod system. The floors are made of mass timber panels which also act as diaphragms and fire separation.

Biography

David Carradine, is a Senior Structural Research Engineer with BRANZ, and has worked on a wide range of timber structural systems since coming to New Zealand in 2008. He aims to provide guidance and data to improve efficiency of bigger and better timber building design and construction, optimising the benefits the different systems can offer. David is the current President of the Timber Design Society.

Daniel Moroder,  is a structural engineer at PTL Structural Consultants and is specialized in the design of timber structures. Daniel worked for several years in the timber industry before obtaining his PhD at the University of Canterbury working on multi-storey timber buildings. He is involved in NZ and European Timber Design Standards, and is the vice-president of the NZ Timber Design Society and co-editor of the Timber Design Society Journal.
