Abstract
The M7.8 Kaikoura Earthquake, 14 November 2016,
On 14 November 2016 a M7.8 earthquake hit Kaikoura, New Zealand, this talk outlines some of the engineering response, observations and learnings from the event. We have three speakers who will cover a range of topics:
-
- Liam Wotherspoon will share his observations on ground damage;
- Rick Henry will share some of the work that is being done around precast floor systems and how they performed in the Wellington CBD;
- Paul Campbell will share the work being done on precast panel inspections and the engineering leadership response.

Bio
Liam Wotherspoon is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. He sits on the leadership teams of QuakeCoRE and the Resilience to Nature’s Challenges research programmes, and is a Management Committee member for the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.
Rick Henry is a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. He is currently leading research into the seismic design of reinforced concrete walls, precast concrete structures, and low-damage systems. He is a member of the technical committee of the New Zealand Concrete Structures Standard (NZS 3101) and has been involved in a working group providing guidance on the critical damage states and residual capacity of buildings in Wellington following the Kaikoura Earthquake.
Paul Campbell is a Technical Director with Opus and current SESOC President. He is part of the Wellington Engineering Leadership team that is leading the engineering response. Paul is also involved with group looking into the issues with the precast floors and has led the guidance work on inspecting precast cladding panels.
