Abstract
Case Study - Cost effective fire engineering solutions for steel structures
You are invited to attend this evening presentation by Dr Linus Lim, Technical Director and Martin Feeney, Principal with Holmes Fire who will provide key information about the effects of fire on steel structures and how to ensure economical fire engineering solutions. With structural steel becoming more widely used, it’s increasingly important to understand the impact of fire on steel structures and how to employ effective solutions to maintain steel’s structural integrity during a fire.
The presentation will cover:
• Basis and rationale to consider a fire engineered solution
• Impact of fire on the structural fire performance of modern steel framed buildings
• Overview of technical tools used by fire engineers
• Potential cost savings of fire engineered solutions
• Solution principles
• ‘Standard’ options to explore
• ‘Rules of Thumb’ and guidance that can help stakeholders quickly ascertain likely solutions and savings
• Case studies
Biography
Martin Feeney has practised as a structural engineer with Holmes Consulting Group for more than 20 years. After two years on secondment to HERA, specialising in analysis and design of steel structures in earthquake and fire he started the Auckland office of the international consulting fire engineering firm Holmes Fire where he is a Principal and Senior Fire Engineer.
He is passionate about performance-based design generally and has developed expertise in performance-based fire safety design for a wide range of building types. His special interest is assessing performance of structures when exposed to fire. He has carried out designs on projects in New Zealand, Australia, Spain, California and New York to establish appropriate performance-based solutions for the fire performance of steel structures.
He is a Fellow of both Engineering New Zealand and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and a Past President of the New Zealand Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
Dr Linus Lim is a Technical Director with Holmes Fire. He has a Masters and a Ph.D. degree in Fire Engineering from University of Canterbury, New Zealand. His specialist field of expertise is in the structural fire behaviour of concrete, steel and timber structures.
Linus has 15 years of fire engineering experience with projects in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, USA, Middle East and Asia. Linus has significant consulting experience in developing structural fire engineering strategies and undertaking advanced finite element analysis for buildings and bridges under fire exposure. He also has significant experience in fire engineering for a vast number of commercial, retail, heritage, residential and infrastructure projects. Linus currently leads and manages a team of 11 specialist structural fire engineers in Holmes to provide structural fire engineering solutions for projects in Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
