Abstract
This will be a special gathering and our guest speaker for the evening is Gavin Cormack, who was an Executive Chairman of Beca for many years and the founder of Beca’s bridging team and led them for more than three decades.
Gavin will do this by describing his direct experiences with the South Rangitikei Railway Viaduct and five other important civil engineering projects. We will learn about his personal development as a successful bridge engineer and other personal activities outside the work.
Biography
Gavin Cormack graduated from Canterbury in 1962 with a Bachelor of Engineering. He joined Beca in 1969, for more than three decades he has been involved in the design of major engineering projects around the world.
The award winning New Zealand projects that he has been involved in include the Otira Gorge Viaduct, the bridges on the South Rangitikei Viaduct, the 4000 metre-long potlines at the Bluff smelter, the private viewing boxes at Eden Park, the Auckland casino project and the associated 328 metre high Sky Tower.
Offshore his work has included airport projects in Fiji, wharves in Papua New Guinea, long span bridges in Malaysia and a 338 metre tall communication tower in Macau.
His engineering achievements have been recognised by numerous awards including the IPENZ Structural Award in 1990, the Freyssinet Structural Design Award in 1992 and an Enduring Concrete Award to his South Rangitikei Railway Viaduct by NZ Concrete Society in 2018. In 2006 he was awarded Honorary Doctor of Engineering by University of Canterbury.
