Abstract

The current provisions of NZS 3101:2006 (and its interaction with NZS 1170.5:2004) provide ambiguous instruction on the requirements for the capacity design of nominally ductile shear wall systems. The recent release of the National Seismic Hazard Model update, along with Earthquake Design for Uncertainty document, has been a timely reminder of the criticality of capacity design, even for nominally ductile structures. This paper highlights the perceived confusing aspects of the current requirements of NZS 3101:2006 and proposes a design pathway for a variety of wall-based structural systems that addresses compliance and best-practice requirements.

Biography

Tim completed his Master’s Degree in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology jointly at the ROSE School (Pavia, Italy) and the Université Joseph Fourier (Grenoble, France) after completing his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Auckland. He is Chartered Professional Engineer and has 12 years’ experience as a practicing structural engineer with WSP (formerly Opus) in NZ. He has worked on a variety of public and private sector projects, including Auckland’s City Rail Link. Tim is passionate about the seismic design and seismic resilience of structures. He was inspired to produce this presentation after noticing some gaps in the available industry design guidance.
